Burns Night

Right now there is a ceilidh going on at my place, there are two girls with Scottish Country Dance music on.  They have found everything they can in the house that is even vaguely tartan including a scarf, a picnic blanket (now the carpet) and the scout necker of a boy I know.  They have to be the most enthusiastic Burns Night fans I’ve ever known.  As I wrote this time last year, it would be my Mum’s birthday today and she was often a Burns widow when my Dad was doing The Immortal Memory at someone’s Burns’ Supper – he often did a few every year, he was a real fan of the Scots language.  The whole Burns Night/Day is a bit of a ‘thing’ now especially at the primary schools which means even at six, the children can manage a Gay Gordon’s or a Dashing White Sergeant.  The grandparents would definitely have a big smile at the girls today although, true to form, they have had to stop for a wee something to eat.

Lucy started the day with a stink, she came in from her morning trip round the garden covered in fox poop.  Nice! Apologies if you have already seen the photo on Instagram.  Please do request to follow me, I have kept it personal for now but I’m happy for you to follow me since you read my blog.

Recipe Trial No 1

Celeriac is something I love the idea of but when the nodulated root appears in the veg box it is sometimes an effort to deal with it.  Luckily I know a girl who knows what to do to make it taste fabulous (and, no, it’s not soup).

Sarah posted this just as I was going for soup again.  Brilliant I thought, my husband has the Rosti King title round here – he’s always keen to get it right – so he can make dinner.  Double brilliant.

The Rosti topped with a poached egg, not bad indeed.

This recipe is highly recommended  Root Veg Rosti from The View from the Table, much better than the potato ones I’ve had here before if you know what I mean.  Thanks for trying it out, C and thanks to Sarah for passing it on.

We are off to a Burns themed birthday party so it’ll be haggis tonight no doubt.

Nearly forgot to show you another food first, my niece’s Battenburg.  Tasted amazing, Mary and Paul have a lot to answer for…

Japanese Maple or Acer
Japanese Maple or Acer

This amazing Acer caught my eye when I went to check up on the guinea pigs this morning, the colour has changed to the most vibrant bright reddish pink almost overnight.  It’s in a pot and has had a couple of ropy phases since the bad snow years,  so glad to see it in full magnificence again.

The Regeneration

The ‘middle’ room is to get the floorboards done at the same time as the hall and, since it’s empty, we have decided to go for it and change the wall colour too.  When the sun is shining it is a beautifully light room and those windows are amazing, they let light all the way through to the hall.  It can be quite dark though because of the green damask print wallpaper which I quite like actually but it does not fit with the way I’d like it to look. Light, bright and fresh is what I’m thinking with an array of colours coming from our belongings on the shelving.

Here’s how it looked last Friday before the mission to clear it out started, it had become a dump.  We all have our own little visions for this former dining room.  Playroom, study, music room, library, snug or games room, it is my goal to make sure it stays a bit more organised and pleasant to visit, whatever it is used for.

no idea how I got this effect - this is how full the room was last weekend

This is how it looks right now, as I type. Imagine me sitting on that hideous red chair, which will not be coming back in, if I can help it.

Friday 15 Nov 2013 – note the stain samples

There should be a new version to show you on Monday, this weekend is painting weekend, once we decide on a colour.  There is a beautiful blue in my mind’s eye but who knows what colour you’ll see in the after photo.

Friday Treat

My promise to H yesterday was that we would make chocolate crispies with her friend when she came to play. Yum, hope there’s one left for me.

Well, I wish you a super weekend, think of me in my painting gear doing my stuff (and procrastinating no doubt), x

the pad is filled in this week, that’s 5 less things to think about

This is the week I’m going to get the show back on the road with the regeneration and get organised with, well, everything.  The running around to find the right sock will always happen, that’s for sure but I need to give myself more of a chance of finding it quickly. Organisation is going to be my new best friend, it will give me peace of mind and some of my time back.

Apple Picking

Yesterday was a funny old day, the thing that made me smile was this gorgeous arrangement that my niece did using apples she had caught from the tree using her Bapa’s apple picking equipment. H and K spent ages with it, perfecting their technique and making my sister and me laugh and laugh.  It’s a stick, with a net basically.

Instagram

Instagram is just brilliant fun, isn’t it.  I like the feeling of taking a quick snap and making it better by using the effects, in a matter of moments.  It reminds me of the Polaroid camera I had many moons ago, but better, you had to take what you got with the instant print that popped out of the camera.  The pictures today are all Instagram ones.

Yes, I am still loving the wallpaper.
