Day Five

Mondays are not going to be good for reporting the works, I did not see anything at all today.  We did get good news from the structural engineers which means we do not have to trash the cornice in the front room or hall.  The new steel should be here tomorrow.   The alarm situation has been dealt with, or at least the ball is rolling now.

All of these pad stones are now in place ready for the steels to go on, won’t bore you with how it all works.   I’m gutted that I missed the steels going upstairs, I guess they went through the front window via the scaffolding. Anyway, they are ready to go wherever they have to go.

It is really hard to imagine exactly how 3 bedrooms and a shower or bathroom will all fit in up there but I know they will and I am so looking forward to seeing the regeneration happen.

The Weekend

We had a much more relaxed weekend.  The children and I had a great time in Morningside ending up with lunch at the fantastic Edinburgh and Musselburgh institution, the S Luca cafe.  They are famed for their ice cream and do a pretty good breakfast or light lunch (if you avoid the chips).  The ice cream for pudding was fantastic, as always.   http://www.s-luca.co.uk/

Lunch was followed by visiting a beautiful shop I have driven past and meant to pop in for ages now, Spektakulare, on Colinton Road.  I left with 2 of these lovely bowls by Sagaform.  The teapot was calling my name too but I couldn’t quite justify it right now.  Another day.

Sunday found us at the Victor Paris emporium of bathrooms – looking for inspiration. F wants the see through spa bubble bath.  Maybe next house, F.  L did not find the experience inspirational at all, just mind numbingly boring.  H was getting her hair done at her aunty’s ready for a party so she missed all the fun.

Happy Birthday Miss K for today, super six. xx

Day Four

Today was pretty quiet.

The steels arrived early and by 10.20am the rest of the debris had gone and everything went quiet.

There are two hiccups at the moment.  The alarm control panel needs to be moved and we have to use the alarm company’s engineer.  Yes, that will be expensive.  The other one is to do with where one of the supporting steels will go.  The structural engineers are on the case and hopefully we’ll have an answer soon.  Basically it is not possible to put the steel where the drawings show it should go over the bay window.  Another option needs to be decided.  Some pad stones are in for the other steels ready for them to go in on Monday.  I think that’s enough detail for now.

Other Stuff

H has been off school today and I decided to do a job that I’ve been meaning to do for a very long time.  I’ve got a thing about house magazines and I have a huge pile of them to look through and cut bits and bobs out of for my scrapbook. I have to get some ideas together for bathrooms and lots more besides.

day 4.1 036

I did make a start but there were a few games of connect 4 going on at the same time.  It’s not an arduous task so I’m looking forward to getting back to it later, after the Scout Burns Supper.  Always a joy that event.

Lunch

I had a cracking bowl of soup for lunch today, even though I say so myself, it was delicious. It was sweet potato, lentil and chilli with a wee touch of smoky paprika.  I even took a photo of it for you.

Good Ideas

day 4.1 013

My Mum thought that mealtimes were always a surprise to me.  I guess what she meant was that meal planning was not my strong point.  This magnetic pad to go on the fridge is going to change all that. At least it would if I actually opened it and used it. That is my goal for this weekend, I’m going to make it a family task, get organised and shop for the week on Sunday.  Great idea, let’s see if it works.

Day Three

The wind and sleet have been battering the house all day and those poor men have spent a huge proportion of it getting rid of insulation. Here’s what John Snr found when he opened the door to the stairs earlier today.

The floorboards have all been lifted and are to be sold, result. I thought about having them retained and replaced but I soon realised that would be very noisy and impractical particularily with it being upstairs.

The progress upstairs is steady, it’s looking good and is nearly completely stripped.

Other Stuff

H went to school today, she was not too happy, but I thought she’d be fine. Wrong, I got the call all parents dread from the school and soon she was home watching tv all cosied up on the sofa. She’s fine though. The funniest thing is that she’s starving hungry. Early to bed for her again.

Thought this was very sweet, they’ve never done this before.
