25 October 2013

Here we are, Friday again and we’re all anticipating the things we’ll do with an extra hour, let’s not worry about how early it will get dark.

Just a few things to share;

The first is the beautiful house we stayed in last weekend in Newcastle’s Gosforth area.  Our pals have not long moved in to it and it is an absolute cracker.  It was built in 1910 and has lots of original features left.  You enter the house via the gorgeous and unusually shaped front door, then you’re hit by the  wood panelling painted white – it really works.  The floor in the hall and the other rooms downstairs is breathtaking too and when you look more closely you notice the inlaid detail round the edges. I was so inspired by the wooden hall that I have had (yet another) sanding floor company round today.  Just cannot decide whether to go for dark or pale boards.  Any advice gratefully received.

The other thing that strikes you about the house is the windows, so many bays with the original glazing.  it was hard to capture how stunning they are and how huge!

Next thing,

Earthy was looking very seasonal today when I popped in, lovely to see the Halloween thing without hideousness (is that a word).  I’ve never seen so many different types of pumpkins and squashes.

Lastly, there’s a new place to eat in Edinburgh and here’s the cover for the menu, designed collaboratively by two girls I know.

Remember to let me know whether you prefer dark or light wooden stripped floorboards, it’s beginning to get on my nerves that I cannot decide.  Have a fabulous, autumnal weekend. xx

p.s. still no idea what the enamel item from yesterday is

A little posy from the garden
A little posy from the garden

My little posy is sweet and simple – the flowers are beside each other in the garden so it seemed natural to put them together in a vase. This summer has been phenomenal.  We could not have asked for more, the garden is blooming and we have more apples than we know what to with. The air is changing now, particularly in the evening and the nights are drawing in, I  had my fluffy socks on last night to keep the nip from my feet.   The good news is we don’t have to wait so long for the solar fairy lights to come on outside, not managed to capture them well on camera yet, but I will.

Pet sounds is still making me smile, thought you’d like the view from the hall and a detail shot – I really am not pleased with the image in the previous post.  The wall colour is Farrow and Ball’s Skimming Stone, it is very calm and warm for the North facing bathroom.

All that’s left to say is have a great weekend, summer never felt so long (or warm up here). x

Where’s the badgers?

Just in case you need it, here’s Mini Moderns website

Pet Sounds

Our lovely old bungalow has a cool new vibe, the superb ‘Pet Sounds’ wallpaper graces the bathroom wall.  Every time I spot it from the hall I feel  a little smile come to my lips, it is bright, bold and makes the house feel like ours. The contrast with the blue tiles is just what I was after, not gaudy, just fun.  This photograph does not do it justice, I assure you.

Mini Moderns first caught my eye on a trip along the Southbank in London (it was the day that Any Winehouse died, I remember it so clearly).  The Southbank Centre had some of the Day-Tripper range that day, and that was that, I was hooked.festival mug set

Their wares include wallpaper, crockery, textiles and paint, it’s hard to know which of the themes to go for, they are all so funky.  They have a pretty eco outlook too, here’s how Mark Hampshire, one of the founders, puts it, ‘ Our design influences range from mid-century British textiles to vintage toys, from literature to childhood memories. Travel also influences our work – and much of our inspiration comes from holidays and field trips, both at home and abroad.  We produce as much as possible (and certainly all of our wallpaper, paints and fabrics) in the UK. This is both to support UK industry – in some cases, small factories that are the last UK provider of a service – and also to cut down the number of journeys that a product has to make before it reaches the customer.’

Pet Sounds is just one of the cool designs from the Folk Rock theme,  I asked Mark where the inspiration for the design came from, ‘We had been working on 2 separate prints – a woodland creature print and a musical instrument print. On a trip to the West Coast of the U.S, driving along the Big Sur coastline, we suddenly had the idea of bringing the 2 together and injecting a bit of West Coast 60s psychedelia – hence the idea of juxtaposing animals with acoustic instruments.’   It really works for me, that’s for sure.

Teenboy has chosen this for his room, just one section of wall though, don’t want a goth type vibe in there…

Check out the website for the full range at Mini Moderns, there’s something for everyone.  The customer service is second to none, we had a hiccup with the wallpaper that was sorted quickly and sympathetically. Thank you.

Finally, back to Mark who sums up Mini Moderns’ style as, “Conceptually driven illustrative wallpapers and homewares with a nod towards retro styling.” Whatever inspires the team, I wish them great success and I look forward to their next innovative designs.
